The most common sign of water damage is an ugly brown stain, caused by moisture disturbing surface dust and dirt. What follows is a loss of structural integrity, causing the ceiling drywall to sag, often not obvious from the floor.

To assess the damage, shine a flashlight (not your phone!) across the surface toward the affected area. If it’s sagging, you’ll see it—no second-guessing. If you haven’t already, poke a hole to let the water out!

Insulation above ceilings (common in older homes) absorbs water like a sponge, acting as a heat sink instead of an insulator. Wet drywall will bow, sag, and eventually fall—often at 2 AM on a school night.

If you remove wet drywall yourself, you risk a hole leading outside, creating a chimney effect that sucks heat out—especially October to April. Our advice? Leave it until we assess it.
